2026: Extraordinary Monograph 6: When Art Educates: New Cartographies of Contemporary Art Education

Special issue editor: María Méndez Suárez

From the unease of imagining pasts that never were and futures that might have been, to the deep listening that connects us with the sounds of our environment; from ceramics as embodied knowledge that returns us to our original clay, to walls that cry out with the stories of silenced peoples: this compilation of works represents a vast and heterogeneous territory where art education is constantly redefined as a practice of resistance, transformation, and embodied presence.

Contemporary art education cannot continue to replicate empty, fashionable discourses. As the contributions gathered here indicate, it must deconstruct and question, opening spaces where the body, memory, gesture, and word—in all their manifestations—interweave on a shared map as legitimate forms of research and knowledge. The works that make up this monograph reveal a shared understanding: art is a mode of knowledge that involves the body, the different senses, and visual, spatial, proprioceptive, and sonic capacities. In short, it is a way of thinking, feeling, and doing that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries.
